I agree, good post here. My rule is choose 3 social media outlets: NING, FACEBOOK and Twitter.

Limit NING activity to 3 (choose the biggest, the one that you fit the niche best in, and one you just plain like the best for content and friends).

Then I like to use facebook but very sparingly.. it’s hard to keep friends and family separate from ‘business’ so you need to keep the business part to a minimum.

Twitter can be like networking on steroids. Use the 80-20 rule: 80% chat about others, 20% chat about yourself and own business. Think of it as internet Karma.. if you help others.. it will come back to you in spades.

Lastly.
Stumble Upon can be considered a social network. But really it’s a social bookmarking hub. Again use it like internet karma. When you submit other people’s content… they are likely to submit yours!
